According to California Highway Patrol, the driver of a 2013 VW Golf was traveling north in the center turning lane. Witnesses reported the driver was driving very fast and passing traffic in a reckless manner. As it approached Cramer Road, CHP said the driver swerved into the southbound lanes and struck a Ford F-150 truck.

Officers say the impact caused the VW to swerve across the southbound lanes into the path of an Acura RDX, causing the Acura to crash into the right side of the VW. Both vehicles came to rest on the right shoulder of the highway.

Officers say the reckless driver of the VW was pronounced dead at the scene after the crash. CHP said he was a 21-year-old from Auburn.

The driver of the Acura, a 73-year-old man from Grass Valley, sustained major injuries and was taken to an area hospital. The driver of the Ford, a 29-year-old man from Auburn, was not injured.

It's unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor in this collision. That will be determined through a toxicology report from the coroner's office.
