SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- What will Governor Jerry Brown discuss during the first State of the State address of his term?
Few hints have been released by the governor's office, but political experts say Brown will likely be focused on selling lawmakers and voters alike on the painful cuts and tax hikes in his budget proposal.
Governor Brown bluntly stated that his budget would require "sacrifice from every sector of California" when it was unveiled earlier this month, splitting the multi-billion deficit by cutting $12.5 billion in spending and raising $12 billion from tax and fee increases that require voter approval.
"I think we can expect the governor to continue to pitch his plan to balance the budget," said political analyst Steve Maviglio. "He still has the problem of having few Republicans be supportive of this budget."
Brown's tax plan may be hard for Republican lawmakers to swallow, despite recent poll numbers which show a majority of Californians support that plan.
"He's going to go directly to the people, he's said that all along," Maviglio said.
Experts say it is less likely that Governor Brown will discuss what would happen if voters don't approve his tax extensions.
CBS13's coverage of the State of the State address will begin at 5:00 p.m. Monday
