Elk Grove's First Voter-Elected Mayor Takes Oath Of Office

ELK GROVE (CBS13) - Elk Grove's first voter-elected mayor took the oath of office during Wednesday night's city council meeting.

Mayor Gary Davis is the first mayor elected under Elk Grove's 2010 voter-approved election format. It changed the voting for mayor to a citywide election for a two-year term. Prior, the city council selected the mayor on an annual basis.

The mayor will now be able to appoint constituents to city boards and commissions with the city council's approval. Also, the city council will now choose one of its members to preside as vice mayor on an annual basis.

A city resident for eight years, Davis was first elected to Elk Grove's city council in November 2006.

In addition to his role as mayor, Davis works for EdVoice, a nonprofit advocacy organization working to improve student achievement in California public schools.

Davis has initiated many city projects such as Playground Partners, to build a community playground at Morse Park; the Elk Grove Youth Sports Foundation, to ensure every child has the ability to play sports regardless of financial status; and most recently, Elk Grove's first half marathon, Kaiser Permanente's Running of the Elk.
