Driver Accused Of DUI In Fatal Crash
ELK GROVE, Calif. (CBS13) – A woman has been arrested after being involved in a fatal accident while drunk and fleeing the scene, authorities said.
The Elk Grove Police Department said 20-year-old Heile Gantan was driving a red BMW south on Power Inn Road just after 4:30 a.m. Sunday when she lost control, crossing the median and slamming into a tree and light pole, which rolled the car onto its roof.
A male passenger was found dead in the backseat, and officers said Gantan and a female passenger were able to exit the vehicle on their own and leave before authorities arrived. The two were detained a short time later.
Gantan has been booked on charges of vehicular manslaughter, driving under the influence and fleeing the scene of a collision.
The identity of the deceased victim has not been released.
