UPDATE: Deputy Kills Suspect In North Highlands

NORTH HIGHLANDS (CBS13) — For the second time in three days, a Sacramento County Sheriff's deputy fired at a suspect who attacked him, but this time the suspect died.

The incident Tuesday night occurred at a residence in the 6200 block of San Martin Street in North Highlands, near Watt and Don Julio, just before 10.

A deputy responded to a family's emergency call that a man was acting violently inside the home.

"The officer entered the residence and upon arrival made contact with the man, who immediately jumped up and engaged our officer," Deputy Jason Ramos. "The subject rushed him, tackled him and landed on top of him. The male then started striking our officer with a closed fist."

Ramos said the deputy couldn't get the large man off him and fearing he was losing the battle, pulled out his service weapon and shot the suspect multiple times in the upper body.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital were he succumbed to his injuries, Ramos said. The coroner on Wednesday identified the suspect as 24-year-old Johnathan William Rose.

Officials have not released the name of the 31-year-old deputy, who has been with the department for eight years. He was placed on paid leave pending the shooting investigation, per standard department policy.

Ramos said the deputy didn't have time to call for back-up before the shooting happened. "This all happened very quickly," he said.

The shooting followed a Sunday incident in the Arden-Arcade area of Sacramento where a deputy was reportedly attacked by the suspect, Lonnie Hammett, and fired two shots at Hammett to end the scuffle.

Hammett was released from the hospital Tuesday and booked into the county jail.
