Cold Fire Brings Back Memories Of 2015 Wragg Fire In Yolo County
YOLO COUNTY (CBS13) - The Cold Fire burning near Winters has now scorched more than 4,600 acres and is only 10 percent contained as of Wednesday evening.
It's Deja vu for about 100 people in 35 homes who have been asked to leave.
Last year the Wragg fire burned in almost the same area.
"I've lived here for 38 years and been evacuated the last three summers," said Mike Garden after returning from the airport.
Residents who tried to go home were turned away.
"Last night we were told no this morning we were told no," Garden said.
Which is why many passed on the mandatory home evacuation order and decided to take the risk.
"Most people I think stayed in this year because this is the third year we've been under mandatory evacuation," said Don Hutchins who remained at home.
But officials say it's at their own risk.
"We want to make sure it's safe for them to go back home, so they don't have to be uprooted again and they don't have to leave again," said Cal Fire Battalion Chief Scott McLean.
More than 700 fire personnel are battling flames and hot spots in and around Golden Bear Estates and Canyon Creek Campgrounds.
Almost the same scenario a year ago as the Wragg Fire forced some of those same residents out.
"Last year it was almost in the same place except it was on that side of 128," said Robert McKnight who also stayed behind.
Now prepared more than ever and hoping for another break.
"Everybody does everything they can now, the grass cut down, The trees trimmed, everything you can," Gardner added. "Hopefully we'll come back to clear skies and no smoke."
It's still unclear what started the fire on Tuesday, but Cal Fire's biggest concern right now is keeping the fire from jumping over Highway 128, which is still blocked off from Pleasants Valley Road to Markley Cove Resort.
