California State University, Faculty Striking Over Raises

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Hundreds of California State University faculty members are striking at two campuses to protest the administration's decision not to pay negotiated pay raises.

The California Faculty Association voted last week to authorize a one-day walkout Thursday at the East Bay and Dominguez Hills campuses.

The unprecedented union action is the first faculty strike in the history of the 23-campus CSU system.

Faculty members from other Cal State schools are traveling to the East Bay and Dominguez Hills campuses to support their striking colleagues on the picket line.

The faculty union called for the strike after the administration rejected a recommendation to pay a portion of raises negotiated in the last contract.

Administration officials say the university has sustained deep cuts in state funding and doesn't have the money.
