California Shark Attack Survivor Fighting To Protect Species
SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — A Southern California woman who survived a near-deadly shark attack is now fighting to save the species.
Maria Korcsmaros was training for an Ironman competition when she was attacked in May off the coast of Corona del Mar in Newport Beach.
The Orange County Register reports (http://bit.ly/2fFL09N ) that a shark chewed into her side, ribs and liver.
Two lifeguards pulled Korcsmaros from the ocean when they noticed the water turning red, and paramedics kept her heart beating on the way to the hospital.
Now six months later, the 53-year-old Korcsmaros has taken to handing out posters and asking people to sign a petition supporting legislation for more shark protection.
Sharks are targeted for their fins, used to make shark fin soup, considered a delicacy by some.
