California Senate Candidates Split On Fight Between FBI And Apple

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Apple Inc.'s fight with the FBI over accessing a locked and encrypted iPhone used by a gunman in the San Bernardino terror attack has created a split between California's leading Senate candidates.

Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez on Thursday said she supports Apple's decision to contest a magistrate's order to create software to help the FBI hack into the iPhone.

The Orange County Democrat also wants Congress to step in immediately to take up questions on data privacy.

A day earlier, Democratic Attorney General Kamala Harris said she's not picking sides.

Harris says a solution should balance the interests of public safety with a technology industry that frequently faces questions about privacy and snooping.

Sanchez says courts don't have the resources to consider the broad implication of the dispute.
