California Lawmakers Question Whether Daily Fantasy Sports Industry Is Gambling

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - California lawmakers are examining the booming fantasy sports betting industry and how it might be regulated.

Assemblyman Adam Gray is leading a hearing on Wednesday examining the growing industry. He has proposed legislation to require league operators such as DraftKings and FanDuel to be licensed by the state Department of Justice.

Griffin Finan, an attorney for DraftKings, tells lawmakers that his company welcomes oversight and wants to work with lawmakers.

Finan says the games rely on skill because bettors must know details about the players and games in order to win. But detractors say it is gambling because winning relies heavily on chance.

Several states are grappling with how to handle the fast-growing industry.

The state attorney general in New York has ordered companies to stop taking what he says are illegal bets.
