UPDATE: Man Finally Surrenders After Shooting At Deputies
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A man was holed up inside an apartment on Stockton Boulevard for eight hours in south Sacramento after Sacramento County deputies tried to serve him an arrest warrant on Tuesday afternoon.
The man, identified Wednesday as 29-year-old William Hearn, finally was taken into custody at about 11:30 p.m. after deputies shot tear gas into his apartment.
The incident at 7475 Stockton Blvd. started shortly after 3:30 p.m. when deputies tried to serve the man with an arrest warrant. He came out of a bedroom with a shotgun, pointed it at deputies and refused commands to put it down, according to sheriff's spokesman Deputy Jason Ramos. A deputy fired one round that missed Hearn and the deputies exited the apartment. As they left, Hearn fired two rounds at the deputies, both of which missed.
After that, Hearn barricaded himself inside and negotiators were in constant contact with him. A teenage girl, his 16-year-old stepdaughter, was inside with him, apparently by her choice. Five other occupants of the apartment complied with deputies to come out after the shooting.
According to Ramos, Hearn asked for a Burger King hamburger and cigarettes and was delivered the "care package" shortly at about 8:30 p.m.. He said he'd come out after eating but still hadn't until more than two hours later.
Shortly before 11 p.m., with the assistance of an engine truck from the Sacramento Metro Fire Department, a water cannon was employed to break the windows of the apartment that Hearn and the juvenile female had sequestered themselves in. As this was taking place, Hearn fired his shotgun out of the apartment in the direction of the officers outside, Ramos said.
About 15 minutes later, Hearn fired another shotgun round toward the deputies. No deputies were struck by the gunfire.
At about 11:25 p.m., Hearn fired a third shotgun round from the apartment outside in the direction of the officers. In an effort to get Hearn and the female subject to exit the apartment, deputies deployed tear gas into the apartment through the open windows. A minute later, the front door of the apartment opened, and the teen came out. She immediately surrendered to deputies and was detained and taken safely away from the apartment. She was not injured.
As the girl was being detained, Hearn reportedly dropped the shotgun in front of the doorway and walked back and forth in and out of the front door on several occasions. Deputies directed Hearn to throw the shotgun off of the balcony and eventually he did. He was then immediately taken into custody. Hearn was taken to the Sacramento County Main Jail and booked into custody without further incident.
A friend of the family says Hearn is abusive toward women and has pulled off similar stunts in the past.
"He's hysterical, he's crazy and mean and he doesn't want to listen to anyone," Chaunice Thompson said.
A SWAT team was sent into the complex at about 5:15.
A block of Stockton was blocked off from Fleming to Walter during the entire standoff and 15-20 sheriff's vehicles were on scene and a helicopter overhead. A robot was also set up outside The Meridian complex.
The location is across from a grocery store.
Hearn said he had oxygen tanks inside the apartment and threatened to blow them up, according to deputies.
Deputies went unit to unit at the apartment complex evacuating residents.
