Bay Bridge Construction On Schedule With As Many As 400 Working Around The Clock

BAY BRIDGE (CBS13) — From striping to paving and even some demolition, at any one time as many as 400 people are working around the clock on the many tasks needed to get the Bay Bridge open by Tuesday morning.

"This is the last major hurdle that we need to get over to get this bridge open," said spokesman Andrew Gordon. "There is a tremendous amount of excitement. Everyone is feeling very confident, and we are on track."

And when drivers get to take that first ride, they'll notice one major difference going into the tunnel.

"The infamous S curve. You had to make a few sharp turns to get into the tunnel, so as you were coming into the tunnel, you had to veer left. The new approach in and out of the tunnel is a straight shot in."

Making it easier for drivers. Still, it's been anything but a straight shot for people trying to get in or out of San Francisco during the closure.

"We have seen an increased amount of congestion on the roadway, especially in the areas between the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Rafael Bridge traveling northbound," said CHP officer Daniel Hill.

During the next 24 hours, they'll be focused on lighting, paving and cleaning. So it is possible it could open early, and at this point all they will say is that they are on schedule.
