Auditor: City Can Save Millions By Cutting Vehicle Fleet

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A report by the city auditor says Sacramento can save some $5 million by slashing the vehicle fleet.

"We identified more the 240 vehicles that are underutilized," City Auditor Jorge Oseguera told CBS13 at City Hall on Tuesday night, where he presented his findings to the City Council.

The vehicles classified as underutilized are those that are driven 6,000 miles or less per year.

Sacrament officials are looking at any ways to cut costs after the city manager stated Sacramento is looking at a $39 million budget deficit.

"Any penny that we can find now further helps our discussions down the road," City Councilman Kevin McCarty said during the meeting.

The next step will be for departments to turn in vehicles, and the city can then sell those at auction.

The auditor's report also recommends clarification of the city's policy on take-home cars, 90 percent of which are used by police officers. At issue is which officers truly need the vehicles and how far away they're allowed to take them.
