UPDATE: Man Witnesses 24-Year-Old Being Shot Dead In Carmichael
CARMICHAEL (CBS13) - A 24-year-old man was shot dead inside a Carmichael residence on Monday afternoon and another man saw the whole thing go down.
The incident happened at a duplex in the 5700 block of Haskell Avenue shortly after 3 p.m. Sacramento County sheriff's deputies responded for a call for medical aid and found the victim unresponsive inside the residence and suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body, Deputy Jason Ramos said.
They attempted to perform life-saving measures but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
CBS13's Ron Jones spoke with a young man who said his father was just feet away when bullets started to fly.
"Gut-wrenching hoping my sisters were alive and my family were OK, which they are," John Costarella said.
He said his father watched in horror as a family friend was being gunned down. CBS13 video shows the man getting emotional as he described to his family what happened inside the duplex.
"I'm just glad he's alive," said Costarella, who said he didn't know the gunman or why he opened fire.
"It can happen anywhere," a neighbor said. "It's frightening."
As investigators search for a motive, they say a dark-colored car sped away after the shooting. Initially one person was detained, but no one was arrested.
When it comes to crime in the neighborhood, residents gave a mixed response.
"I don't sleep with my windows open anymore," neighbor Jan Reist said. "My home was broken into, ransacked."
But another lady said "everybody knows everybody and it's a really nice neighborhood."
John says his dad is devastated by what he saw.
"He's in shock," he said.
The coroner took the victim's body away Monday night as investigators continued to gather evidence. The man's identity has not been released.
