158 Degrees: Playground Equipment Not The Only Heat Danger
WEST SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — The air temperature in Sacramento may be hovering in the 100s, but the world around you is even hotter.
CBS13's Rob McAllister took a tour of temperatures on the way home from work and taking the kids out to play.
The walk out to the car at 5 p.m. is on pavement that is 135 degrees. The car door handle you'll reach for is a brisk 117 degrees by comparison.
Once you get inside the car and grab the steering wheel, it's right around the high temperature in Death valley at 124 degrees. That makes you want to reach for a cool glass of 44-degree ice water.
But when you get home, the kids are going to want to go to the park and play. Is it safe?
Well, in the shade it's a hot, but manageable 102 degrees. But once you get out on the playground, the heat cranks a rocking dinosaur up to a scorching 158 degrees.
But what about those volunteers working in fireworks booths throughout the Sacramento area? It's back to Death Valley with 124 degrees inside the wooden boxes.
Maybe it's time to hit the pool. Keep the flip-flops on around the deck of the pool where it's a sizzling 123 degrees. In the water, it's a much more manageable and relatively cooler 86 degrees.
Inside our news van it got up to 140 degrees, but with the A/C pumping out 62-degree air, it's much more tolerable.
