100-Year-Old Still Teaching Music Through Love Of Listening

AUBURN (CBS13) - She's taught her students how to play piano for decades, and this weekend they honored her as she celebrated a milestone birthday to the tune of 100.

Jane Lyman can't tickle the ivories anymore, but she still teaches through sound.

She claims she has limits.

"I don't play anymore, that's a limitation, but I love to listen," she says.

Lyman may not see clearly either, but she has certainly struck a chord with her clientele.

"Oh, she's helped me immensely," one student says. "She's an inspiration."

She's taught tunes for 45 years, sharing her passion of piano..

"I'm here to do what I can for other people," Jane says. "I think that's why I'm here."

Jane teaches 10 students a week now at her assisted living home.

"Keeps my mind active I think and I just like it," she says.

She first created melodies in 1920 at 8 years old.

Jane's career on the keys took a high note when she started teaching piano to first graders.

"I'm a Taurus so I have to be careful not to be too bossy," she says

In fact this Taurus just turned the page, another sweet sound of success as she celebrated her 100th birthday Sunday.

And doesn't she look great for her age? "Well, that's what people say, but I can't see myself so I don't know about that," she says.

Just because she's lived a century, don't think she'll let her students' skills fall flat.

"All five, 10 fingers can be on notes and she'll know which one is wrong," one her students says.

This great grandmother who's lived through 18 presidents is leaving a legacy through her symphony of students spanning generations.
