Study Suggests Yelling At Teens Could Hamper Long-Term Well-Being
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - If you prefer to yell at your teenager, rather than physically punish them, you still may be doing more harm than good.
A new study from the University Of Pittsburgh shows shouting, cursing or using insults may be detrimental to the long-term well-being of adolescents.
The results of the study were published in the journal "Child Development."
Researchers found that youngsters who experienced harsh verbal discipline suffered from increased levels of depression and were more likely to have behavioral problems.
This is the first study of its kind to link verbal discipline with damaging development in adolescents.
The study suggests that parents who want to mold their child's behavior are better off trying to "communicate with them on an equal level." This can be achieved by talking to them about concerns and worries rationally.
