SOUTH CONNELLSVILLE (KDKA) – Firefighters were called to a convenience store fire in Fayette County early Thursday morning.

Around 4:30 a.m., people in the small South Connellsville community say they knew something was wrong as Marky Finner's Supermart caught fire.

Flames and thick smoke billowed out of the building as firefighters arrived on the scene.

Firefighters arrived at the scene quickly due to the fire station being located right across the street.

Thelma Lancaster lives right next door to the store and said she was awakened by her son. Soon after, they were evacuated.

"We had to leave just in case the flames got intense," she said.

State Police Fire Marshall Criag Soltis has not determined the cause of the fire. However, he said it originated in the back storage room.

Soltis says the interior of rear of the building was badly burned. That storage area housed an office and shelves filled with store products.

"A lot of local people come to buy their food, they had awesome food. I'm gonna miss it a lot," Lancaster said.

There is no word on when, or if, the store will reopen. The flames in the rear crawled up the wall and into the ceiling. The front of store sustained water and smoke damage.

There were no injuries.

The fire is being investigated by the South Connellsville Police Department.
