Radioactive Waste & Armed Guards - What's Happening In Apollo?

PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) - It sounds like a premise for a spy novel- armed guards, fences being erected overnight, Cold War politics, espionage, nuclear waste, rumors of radiation poisoning- and across the street are homes with very frightened people.

This isn't a best-selling thriller, but a drama playing out in the Apollo/Vandergrift neighborhood of Kiskimere, where 50 very anxious households are wondering why the Army Corp of Engineers and Homeland Security stopped the clean up of a nuclear waste site in the neighborhood over concerns of  "complicated material." Now, there are guards carrying machine guns walking the streets.

What is happening in Kiskimere??

KDKA-AM's Larry Richert talks to reporter Erich Schwartzel, who went to Kiskimere and reported extensively on what is happening there, as well as Mary Anne Walerski, who owns a house across the street from the site and is frightened for her health and home from what is behind the fence.
