Pizza Hut's New Pizza Box Turns Smartphones Into Movie Projectors

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - It's called the Blockbuster Box.

Pizza Hut created a new cardboard pizza box that turns into a projector for your smartphone.

The traditional plastic disc at the center of the pizza - that keeps the box lid from touching - has been replaced with a lens, which can be inserted into a hole in the side of the box.

Remove the pizza, put your phone in the box and the lens will project the movie onto the wall.

Don't have Netflix, or some other movie account? Pizza Hut prints a QR code on each box that you can scan with your phone for a free movie, depending on your pizza choice.

"I don't know if the quality would be that great, but I think it would be great in like a college standpoint, not necessarily for the everyday consumer," Dennis Thomas said.

"I guess it would be cute outside, you go on picnics, family outings, things like that," Bonita Penn said.

"That's pretty cool, kind of retro. People love pizza and movies so why not?" Erica Geisterfer said.

However, not everyone is in favor of the new idea.

"I feel like I don't want my pizza box to come with accessories," Olivia Rehak said. "I think that's weird. Technology is too much now. Pizza should just stay pizza."

Of course, if you want to actually hear the movie, you may need to have some Bluetooth speakers, or an audio cable since your phone will be inside a box.

But, from a marketing standpoint, it could just make a difference. After all, isn't that what Pizza Hut is going for?

"I would call it a point of purchase marketing technique where right at the point of where people are deciding what to order, they might pick this pizza over another pizza or pick pizza over something else just because of the novelty of the box," Point Park University Professor Elaine Luther said.

If you do opt to try it, just make sure you take your phone out of the box after the movie to avoid throwing away your device.

But, you'll have to wait to try it because it's only being released in Hong Kong for now.
