Study Reveals The Most Dangerous Intersections In Allegheny County

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- When coming to a crossroads in Allegheny County, proceed with caution.
A new data analytical study commissioned by the law firm Dallas W. Hartman PC says we have the most dangerous intersections in the state.
Though PennDOT disputes that finding, saying it's spending hundreds of millions of dollars each year addressing concerns and making the roads safer here.
"We're always investing in safety," PennDOT traffic engineer Todd Kravits said. "We're always striving to make our roadways safer for the motorists."
But between 2014 and 2016, the study findings show that Allegheny was the site of more than 15,000 crashes at intersections, and it singled out the worst three.
The third most dangerous intersection, according to the study, is at the heavily trafficked Route 51 at Whited Street. Over that three-year period, there were 36 crashes with 20 injuries -- including a tractor trailer crash earlier this year.
There were even more accidents at the second most dangerous intersection -- McArdle Roadway at the Liberty Bridge. The heavy traffic and crossing pattern resulted in 65 crashes and 13 injuries including one fatality.
But the most dangerous of all, according to the analysis, is West Carson Street at the West End Bridge -- it topped the list with 93 crashes and 32 injuries in just that three-year period.

This despite a reconfiguration of the West End Circle that was designed to make it safer for motorists. PennDOT says most of those accidents occurred because of rerouted traffic to accommodate construction work nearby and says the situation was similar on Route 51.
"Many of areas, like I mentioned, were either under construction or were completed when we felt we made improvements," Kravits said.
