Man taken into custody after attempting to assault sheriff deputy outside of Allegheny County Courthouse
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - A man is in custody after attempting to assault a sheriff's deputy outside of the Allegheny County Courthouse.
According to the Allegheny County Sheriff's Office, on Thursday Deputy Kyle Klein was walking in front of the courthouse when Tyrone Kelly attempted to punch him several times.
Kelly was taken to the ground and subdued. Deputy Klein did not sustain any significant injuries.
According to court documents, Kelly greeted Klein before lunging at him on Grant Street. Klein claims he told Kelly to stop but he didn't. When Kelly was on the ground, he allegedly tried to grab the gun off Deputy Heather Polk.
The affidavit states that when he was taken into custody, Kelly kept saying he wanted to be shot in the face.
Recently, Kelly had been reported missing but was found safely. His family said that he suffers from bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
Allegheny County Sheriff Kevin Kraus addressed the incident and while he said he is thankful the situation wasn't worse, he did say it still sends a message.
"I think this incident illustrates issues society is dealing with today as it relates to crime and mental health," he said. "I also think systematically the system needs to change on these issues."
Sheriff Kraus also added that the deputies involved in the incident were able to return to work.
