Giant Eagle Launches iPhone App

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Up to now, high-tech at the grocery consisted of bar code readers happily beeping up the total.

Now after a quick registration on Giant Eagle's website and downloading a free app, your grocery shopping gets a multi-use and very portable tool.

"On your homepage, you have your Giant Eagle Advantage Card and you can use that to scan at the cashier," a Giant Eagle spokesman said.

It replaces your key chain card. The app also comes with electronic offers, which are basically electronically offered coupons, which you scroll, select and with a click it's sent.

"Electronically to your Giant Eagle Advantage Card and if you were to purchase those Bounty paper towels, you get the discount as soon as you scan your card," the Giant Eagle representative said.

"That's nice, I enjoy it because I already use the e-offers online," Heather Ligon, of East Liberty, said.

The app also has a variety of recipes. When you choose one, click the plus sign and the ingredients are added to your shopping list.

Speaking of the shopping list, if you and your spouse use the same log in, you can see each other's list.

Also, if you're in an area you're not familiar with, the app has a store locator.

Right now, the app is only available for the iPad and the iPhone, but they are working on one for the Droid and other smart phones. They hope to be able to introduce that very soon.
