Fleury Unveils Stadium Series Pads, Helmet In Practice

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The Pittsburgh Penguins are back on the ice following the Olympic break and a certain goaltender showed off a new look today.

The Penguins will take on the Chicago Blackhawks at Soldier Field on Saturday as part of the NHL's Stadium Series.

As has been the tradition with outdoor games, goaltenders put their stamp on the event with new pads or a new look to their helmet.

On Tuesday, Marc-Andre Fleury's mask for the Stadium Series game was revealed. The mask has been painted in the fashion of a Pittsburgh Steelers helmet, with a few alterations.

The images of the helmet spread across social media sites like wildfire.

But, where did the idea come from for the helmet?

"Just started with talking to Jeff Zatkoff. He was thinking a little about it and then went another way so I thought it was a good idea," Fleury said.

"We weren't sure if you could really make it work and I kind of had the idea to do it on mine. But, at the end of the day, he's going to be the one playing. So, I think it's cool that he's able to put that on his helmet as a tribute to the Steelers and playing in the football stadium, it's kind of neat. It's such a big sports town and they love all their teams. So, it's nice to be able to show a little respect to them," Zatkoff said.

Today, Fleury's pads and gloves for the game brought the social media house down again.

The leg pads are metallic gold with a black stripe across the bottom. The blocker is solid metallic gold, while the catching glove is white with the same metallic gold trim.

Should he have a solid performance in the game, will Fleury consider wearing them for the rest of the season?

"We'll see. It might make me think," Fleury said. "The other one's have been alright too so you can't just ditch them."

Of course, this isn't the first time Fleury has made a fashion statement with his equipment.

Many Penguins fans will remember his signature bright yellow pads and gloves he wore to start his career in the National Hockey League.
