ALIQUIPPA, Pa. (KDKA) — A very upsetting discovery was made on an Aliquippa sidewalk last month.

A dog was found dead in a trash bag, and the Beaver County Humane Society recently learned the cause of death. Now, its humane officers need the public's health to find the person responsible.

The humane society shared a cell phone video from a resident that shows the moments a woman and man made a heartbreaking discovery while walking her dogs in early January. They were walking Green Street, right by Monaca Road and Stevie's Dairy Mart in Aliquippa.

"Her dogs came across a black trash bag. They kept pulling the owner, was obviously very intrigued," said Samantha Scobie, humane society police officer with the Beaver County Humane Society.

Inside the sealed black trash bag was a dead dog on a fluffy bed covered with a black and white blanket. The dog was wearing a blue collar with no tag.

"It was really close to a bridge and creek. After me and my partner went to the location, we believed that someone was probably driving down the road, went to go chuck it in the creek, missed and just kept going," Scobie said.

Scobie said the dog was a male Yorkshire Terrier, possibly a Chihuahua mix, with tan and curly hair. Officers believe he was between 3 and 4 years old.

There were no obvious signs of death. And after no one came forward to claim the dog, they sent him out for an evaluation.

"It was discovered that the little guy died from blunt force trauma to the chest," said Scobie.

Humane officers learned that the small dog was in good health before he died.

Officer Scobie said this isn't the first time a dead dog has been found on the streets of Aliquippa and wasn't claimed by anyone.

"Unfortunately, it seems to be happening more, hence why we would like to find who did it because if we get one person that did it, it will lessen it," she said.

They need people in the community to help them track down who did this.

"Any vet facilities that might have seen a dog similar to this, anything that might lead to a simple we saw a dog walking here," Scobie said.

Humane officers are asking people who live near Green Street and Monaca Road to check their security cameras. Officer Scobie said the person responsible would likely face a felony charge, which could lead to jail time.

"I would like to be able to get justice for this little guy. He and all the other animals don't deserve this. It's not fair. They are here for us and then we treat them in such a cruel manner, it's unjust," Scobie said.

If you think you've seen a dog that fits the description or you have any information that could help them solve this mystery, call the humane society's investigations department at 724-775-5801 ext. 123.
