Chicken And Egg Rescued From Bridge

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- You know how the joke goes, what came first, the chicken or the egg? Well, residents in McKeesport found out the answer Tuesday morning.

Turns out, the answer? Both.

A chicken, and her egg, had to be rescued from the McKeesport-Duquesne Bridge during the Tuesday morning commute.

McKeesport Police were called around 7:45 a.m. to help direct traffic and watch over the hen while a local kennel official could rescue it.

The bird is now being called Bridgette, all because she was found on a bridge. After she was rescued, she was taken to Sable Kennel.

"First time I had a chicken on a bridge, not the first time I had a chicken," one of Bridgette's rescuers said.

Humane officials arrived on scene and pondered what was going to be the best way to get the chicken and the egg to safety. So, using a sheet, officers made the bridge location secure, but then Bridgette ran underneath their van."

"I got the catch pole and we just pulled it out from underneath the van," the rescuer said. "Then, we picked up the egg and took them home, safe and sound."

If you are the owner, or have information on the owner call the Sable Kennel during normal business hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 412-660-2350.

The hope is her owner will come forward in the next 24-48 hours to claim Bridgette, but if her original owner does not come forward, the kennel says they have about five or six calls offering to give the bird a new home.
