Photographer John Moore captured portraits of undocumented immigrants facing deportation in an Arizona prison as well as those recently deported, or planning to enter the U.S., on the other side of the border.
Glegario Ramiriz, 44, poses for a portrait as he serves time in Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's tent jail in Phoenix, Ariz., March 11, 2013. Ramirez was arrested in Phoenix in November for drug possession. He said he had been living with his family in Phoenix, and previously Los Angeles, for a total of 34 years. As an undocumented immigrant with a criminal record, he may likely be deported to Mexico after serving his sentence. The jail maintains a controversial policy of issuing striped uniforms and pink undergarments to inmates, despite an ongoing court challenge.
President Obama's administration deported a record 1.5 million people during his first term of office. In 2012, 55 percent of deportees had criminal convictions for drug offenses or driving under the influence, according to U.S. immigration officials.
