Top bun - America's favorite burgers

Burger King's Whopper was first created more than 55 years ago and remains a classic favorite.

In honor of National Burger Day, May 28, feast your eyes on burgers that have inspired popular, and sometimes cult-like, devotion.

Umami burger

This West Coast chain is famous for their namesake burger which features a shiitake mushroom, caramelized onions, roasted tomato, parmesan crisp and umami ketchup.

The chain is a favorite among celebs, including Ashton Kutcher who was once the Foursquare mayor of the Hollywood location.

Wendy's Baconator

With nearly 10,000 followers on its Twitter account, this is likely the most popular sandwich on social media. The Baconator features two 1/4 lb. beef patties, bacon and American cheese on a toasted bun.

White Castle sliders

These tiny burgers were immortalized in the 2004 movie "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle." True fans of the sliders can order a "Crave Case" of thirty burgers.

Shake shack

This New York-based chain started off as a single hot dog cart in Madison Square Park and has since grown to include locations across the East Coast. Patrons have been known to stand in excruciatingly long lines to order one of Shake Shack's simple, yet addictive, burgers.

In-N-Out Burger

True fans of these West Coast burgers may order them "Animal Style," with lettuce, tomato, a mustard-cooked patty, pickle and extra grilled onions.

Five Guys

Now a chain with more than 1,000 locations, Five Guys started out as a single family-owned restaurant in Arlington, Va. in 1986. Burgers are made with fresh beef and can be ordered with any of the 15 free toppings on the menu.
