The Running of the Bulls has as many as a dozen bulls and steers, weighing more than half a ton each, let loose for several minutes through a half-mile stretch of cobblestone streets behind thousands of human beings, many of them tourists. Since 1924, 13 people have been killed.

There are other ways of getting injured during the San Fermin Festival. The opening day of the fiesta on July 6 saw revelers jumping off fountains. Some of the jumpers sustained head injuries.

For the sixth year in a row, the Running of the Bulls was preceded by the Running of the Nudes, a protest organized by People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals. It featured animal rights activists, some of them naked except for plastic horns, and the red bandana worn by those who try to outrun the bulls.
