As reported by celebrity stylist Phillip Bloch on The Early Show, old-fashioned Hollywood elegance, shown here by actress Lena Olin, ruled the evening at the 55th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards.
Jennifer Garner of "Alias" was one of Bloch's favorites. "She was wearing a dress that fit like a glove! Look how beautiful," he said. He noted that the right fit is important for the actresses, whether they're in jeans or in formal wear. Garner wore a cream-colored Narciso Rodriquez dress.
Marg Helgenberger of "CSI" also got high marks from Bloch. "A lavender color and a '20s feel," he said, adding that he saw a similar trend during Fashion Week in New York. He also had high praise for Helgenberger's large jeweled pin: "I love a girl that accessorizes well."
Christina Applegate, who won an Emmy for outstanding guest actress in a comedy series for her work on "Friends," went for a '20s look.
Debra Messing of "Will & Grace," shown here accepting her Emmy as outstanding lead actress in a comedy series, won kudos for her hairstyle. "Very Lauren Bacall," Bloch commented. Messing was in a strapless Elie Saab pink copper silk brocade dress.
Cheryl Hines of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" actually was styled by Bloch himself. She wore a Valentino gown that he termed "very sexy."
Sarah Jessica Parker of "Sex and the City" was singled out by Bloch for always tastefully doing her own thing. For this event, Parker wore a pale pink tulle Chanel gown.
Alicia Silverstone, in a pink dress with a plunging neckline, also made the top fashion list.
Jennifer Aniston mockingly responds to the call of photographers as she arrives for the Emmy Awards.
One of the evening's trends: big earrings. Patricia Heaton of "Everybody Loves Raymond" was in the fashion swim with the stars of "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy," from left: Jai Rodriguez, Carson Kressley, Kyan Douglas, Thom Filicia, and Ted Allen.
Again, big earrings, this time on Jane Kaczmarek of "Malcolm in the Middle." Many celebrities planned to donate their Emmy wear to the "Clothes Off Our Back" charity. The fundraiser, which auctions off the clothes on eBay, was created by Kaczmarek and her husband, actor Bradley Whitford of "The West Wing," to benefit the Cure Autism Now Foundation and the Union of Concerned Scientists.
According to Bloch, Kim Cattrall of "Sex and the City" was one of the night's fashion "misses." Said Bloch, "I thought it was a little too sparkly. It didn't fit well and a little too young. Her breasts look smashed. It just wasn't fitting right on her." He said it's a beautiful dress (Armani) and Cattrall has "a gorgeous body." But it didn't work.
Another fashion miss: Stockard Channing of "The West Wing." Bloch said Channing is "always stylish and always wins awards for her style and acting. Carolina Herrera did the dress, but I thought it looked old-fashioned on Stockard. Maybe if it was on somebody younger and fit in the waist, it would look sexier."
Joan Rivers, who regularly offers tough fashion commentary on E! Entertainment Television, had to take a lot of good-natured ribbing herself this year for wearing this black-and-gold feathered number. Bloch listed her as a fashion "miss."
The actresses were not the only ones to earn Bloch's disapproval; he did not have high marks for Joe Pantoliano's blue polka dots. This probably did not ruin the actor's evening, though; he was an emotional winner for his supporting role in "The Sopranos."
How do you kiss a colleague at the Emmys? Very carefully. Cheryl Hines (back to camera) and Sarah Jessica Parker demonstrate.
