Tough Row To Hoe
Farmer Mike Beyer of Sidney, Neb. talks with Jim Axelrod about the high price of diesel. Beyer says the increase in price could cost him as much as $100-a-day more than what he spent last year.
Tough Business
The Price Patrol heads west to Lincoln, Neb. Along the way Jim Axelrod talks with Chris Stuetelberg in Cass County, Iowa. He is is a newspaper distributor and says he is in danger of going out of business because of high gas prices.
Running On Empty
Auto repair shop owner Lance Buick of Omaha, Neb. says running on empty can cost thousands of dollars in damage. As the gas tank empties the car tends to draw up sediment that can clog your fuel filter. Also, in some cars the fuel pump is housed inside the gas tank and relies on the gasoline to keep from overheating.
In The Heartland
Day four of the Cross-Country Price Patrol takes the team through the picturesque Iowa countryside. The average gas price is 17 cents-a-gallon cheaper than in neighboring Illinois.
If You Build It, They Will Come
The Field of Dreams in Dyersville, Iowa was made famous in the 1989 Kevin Costner film. Now a popular tourist attraction, the field is having its biggest attendance summer since the release of the movie.
The Mighty Mississippi
The Price Patrol team crosses the Mississippi River on the way to Dubuque, Iowa. Docked along the Iowa bank, the Riverboat Twilight.
Slow Go
South of Chicago one Price Patrol vehicle encounters a traffic jam that stretched a 10-mile trip into two hours. The problem was a long stretch of construction that limited traffic to two lanes in some places.
Where RVs Rule
One stop on the Price Patrol is Monaco Coach Corporation near Elkhart, Ind., which is described as the RV capital of the world. Sixty-four percent of the nation's RVs are made in Indiana. The president of the Recreational Vehicle Industrial Association tells CBS News that gas prices are not hurting sales thanks to retiring baby boomers hitting the road.
Straight And Narrow
The Price Patrol team traveled part of the way from Sundusky, Ohio to Elkhart, Ind. with the May family. Gary May says high gas prices have forced him to take direct routes when using the family's RV.
On The Road To Stay
Larry and Sue Lantzer stopped in Fremont, Ind. on their cross-country drive in their new RV. Sue tells a CBS News producer she nearly needs to take heart medication every time she fills up because gas prices are so shockingly high. But the Lantzers do not plan to significantly cut their travel because of price concerns.

The Price Of The Ride
The Cross-Country Price Patrol stops at Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky, Ohio. Park officials attribute a 4 percent decline in attendance to the region's troubled economy and higher fuel prices. As a result they have cut ticket prices dramatically for seniors and children.
Shore Bound
Jim talks with Carl Wolf of the Battery Park Marina just outside Sandusky, Ohio. He is noticing a lot of weekend cancellations for boating trips -- and a lot of marina regulars just not going out at all because of steep fuel costs.
