The Publicity Hound
From December 2002: As the star of the "Barney Cam," the Bushes' Scottish terrier is the White House's latest star. "Barney is what you might call a 'publicity hound,'" says White House spokesman Ari Fleischer. "But he was unable to watch his own video because he hit the 'paws' button."
Barney had another little White House adventure the week before Christmas, as President Bush and first lady Laura Bush gathered some Washington children together for a Christmas story.
The president and first lady actually were participating in the children's story hour in the Roosevelt Room at the White House on Dec. 17.
Now, as anyone who has watched the "Barney Cam" knows, Barney moves pretty freely around the White House. But when he popped into the Roosevelt Room during story time, the dog apparently startled some of the children. President Bush quickly took the situation -- and Barney -- in hand.
With Barney in his arms, President Bush was able to give him a proper introduction to his young audience.
And soon Barney's reception was as warm as ever.
After all, Barney is one of the president's best friends.
Only a few days later, on Dec. 21, the Bush family set off to spend the Christmas holiday at Camp David. Here, first lady Laura Bush walked with her mother, Jenna Welch, past reporters as they departed the White House.
Also bound for Camp David were President Bush's twin daughters, Barbara, left, and Jenna.
And the most important member of the family went to Camp David, too.
