Ballpark Roadtrip: Yankee Stadium

CBSNews.com's Gordon Donovan tours New York's Yankees Stadium in the third of a five-part "Ballpark Roadtrip" photo series.

Yankee Stadium is a stadium located in the the Bronx, a borough of New York City. It serves as the new home ballpark for the New York Yankees, replacing the previous Yankee Stadium, built in 1923.

The new stadium is meant to be very similar in design to the original 1923 Yankee Stadium.

A couple eating garlic french fries and suggested we try them - you can't wrong here. So we got fries, a Philly cheese steak and a beverage (no lids), and walked around for a place to eat on the field level.

No place with tables anywhere, so we grabbed a seat in the right field area. A staff member started blowing a whistle and told people they had to get to their seats. Security started checking that people were seated. As one security member came over, before he could say anything, I said we don't belong here, but we'd finish eating and go. He said OK.

Just as he walked around away another guard came over and checked everyone's ticket. He got to us again, same thing, but this guy wanted us to move one section over and in the last row. We were already three rows from the back. Just as he walked away yet another brain trust of the Yankees security came over and told us we had to eat someplace else.

The "Great Hall," a large concourse that runs between Gates 4 and 6. With seven-story ceilings, the Great Hall is lined with 20 banners of past and present Yankees superstars.

After being hustled out of our dining spot, we headed to the grandstands behind home plate in the upper level. These were great seats for $25.00 dollars each. You see the whole field and you'll find the real Yankee fans.

The Yankees Museum tells baseball's and the franchise's story through various displays of artifacts and memorabilia. Here is a sculpture of Yogi Berra with another sculpture of Don Larsen pitching his no-hitter in the 1956 World Series.

Yankee Pride is everywhere. Three championship trophies are on display in "The Yankees Museum."

A Highlanders hot dog ad on one of the concession stands. One of the American League's eight charter franchises, the club was founded in Baltimore in 1901 as the Baltimore Orioles, and moved to New York City in 1903, becoming known as the New York Highlanders before being officially renamed the "Yankees" in 1913.

The Yankees interlocking "NY" was originally designed by artist Louis B. Tiffany in 1877 for a medal to honor the first NYC police officer shot in the line of duty. It was later adopted by the New York Highlanders in 1909.

The food court, with its limited seating, has some great images of Yankee stars eating or endorsing food products.

The center field scoreboard, which measures 59 x 101 feet, is the third-largest high-definition scoreboard in the world.

Monument Park is seen in center field with the new bleachers above it. There are six monuments and 24 plaques in Monument Park. The three original monuments of Gehrig, Huggins and Ruth were on the field of play in the first Yankee Stadium.

The stadium is huge. It took me an hour and 45 minutes to walk around the entire park. Boston's Fenway Park took 35 minutes, and Baltimore's Oriole Park about an hour. The area in the center field is a great spot to stand and enjoy a beer at the Mohegan Sun sports bar and Bleachers Cafe.

Freddy Sez carries a frying pan with a shamrock painted on it, which he says "Brings 'em luck." He also carries a number of colorful hand-painted signs adorned with messages to encourage the team and the fans.

Yankees pitcher A.J. Burnett follows through with a pitch to the Orioles DH Luke Scott in the 4th inning. Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez is playing third base.

A wall in one of the corridors under the bleachers is decorated with numbers of retired Yankees numbers.

As for the game, the Yankees beat the Orioles 6-4 before 47,194 fans on a Wednesday afternoon. So the Bronx Bombers are doing something right. By the way, three home runs were hit that day.

The decorative frieze with pennants like the old stadium and how they honor history is great. You can see the field from all section concourses. This is the where Citi Field and Mets lose out. Buy cheap seats if any are available and just walk around park. There are many places to stand get a perspective of the game.
