Verizon iPhone Could Be Announced Today

(CBS) - Verizon Wireless is expected to announce today that it will soon offer the iPhone, breaking AT&T's four-year exclusive on the device.

It's all speculation until Verizon's event in New York City begins later this morning (expected around 11am).

But CNET's Maggie Reardon says, all signs point to an iPhone on big red, "I don't think it's going to be an LTE phone, which would be for Verizon's new 4G network."

Instead of that forthcoming, lightning-fast network, the Verizon Wireless iPhone is more likely to work on 3G. It scores high marks for reliability, but doesn't let you talk and surf like you can on AT&T.

That may give some shoppers pause -- especially since Verizon has those fast Android-based LTE devices due out in a couple months.

Still, Rearson says as many as 13 million iPhones could be sold to Verizon customers this year, "Verizon's chief technology officer says he's confident that Verizon's network will be able to hold up to any demand.  But I think that it's something to watch out for."

There's also the traditional Apple product cycle, which may see a new iPhone out by summer.  Cell company contracts can be a real drag when it comes to that.
