A woman grieves for the murder of her entire family, killed at the hands of politicians, fighting for control ahead of this year's presidential election. The slain victims included anyone they see as a rival, even mere supporters of the opposition.

The locals say the hills are full of blood. Babies, children and their parents are murdered in the most brutal fashion. And since no one here has anything to steal and few are high profile leaders it seems the only motive is to instill fear.

Fear silences the terrified community where already more than 100 people are dead, casualties of the war being waged between Nelson Mandela's ruling ANC party and the new United Democratic Party or UDM.

"Fear is a concept....these people regard me as their leader. The whole struggle in this area was brought about by my initiative," Nkabinde says.

UDM leader Sifiso Nkabinde was called the "godfather." The self-confessed warlord-turned-politician, said he knew one day there would be a bullet with his name on it. His assassination came just months after his acquittal on 16 counts of murder.

CBS News had a rare opportunity to see Nkabinde in his home region, where its widely believed he ordered the killing of almost half the town council.

"If they are saying that I am involved in violence in this area then they will have to come up with evidence as far as that is concerned," Sifiso Nkabinde said.

Ironically, the evidence came from his own party, the UDM. To avenge Nkabinde's murder, a retaliatory strike was launched against Mandela's ANC, adding eleven more bodies to the mounting casualty figures.

Mandela claimed the motive for many of the killings was to undermine his government. "Democracy is their enemy," he said.

But the ANC is also responsible for the bloodshed. A police investigator has fingered the ANC for the murders of several of Nkabinde*s supporters.

Mandela sent thousands of soldiers to keep the peace after the entire local police force was dismissed for corruption. But they have yet to make a single arrest and claim they have no clue as to who murdered Sifiso Nkabinde. It seems the only certainty, here, is that with the elections still months away, the reign of terror will continue.
