Woman dies after falling from Philadelphia building, pedestrian hurt
PHILADELPHIA -- The boots of the victim lying on the sidewalk were a stark reminder of the tragedy that unfolded in Philadelphia, CBS station KYW-TV reports.
An 18-year-old freshman at Temple University fell to her death from an 8th floor window Thursday night.
"She may have even been sitting on the ledge, it's about a 2-foot-wide ledge, possibly taking some pictures," Philadelphia Chief Inspector Scott Small said.
It's believed the student may have slipped as she was going back inside.
The woman was visiting two friends at an Art Institute of Philadelphia dorm room when she fell just before 6 p.m.
Both of the male students the victim was visiting were being questioned by police.
The freshman hit a 44-year-old woman, who was walking on the 16th Street sidewalk. She was rushed to Hahnemann University Hospital. She suffered fracture vertebrae in her neck and had some teeth knocked out but is expected to be OK.
"The 44-year-old female, she was conscious, she was talking, she was very upset, and she was complaining of pain," Small said.
At the time of the accident, the streets were crowded with pedestrians.
"You never would think someone would fall on you while you were trying to walk down the street. It's a very unfortunate accident," pedestrian Cora Williams said.
Temple University released the following statement:
"Temple University is deeply saddened to learn of the death of one of our students in Center City Philadelphia. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends. Counseling for Temple students is available."
A grief counselor was expected to be on hand Friday.
Police were obtaining a search warrant to look inside the dorm room. While the investigation is ongoing, there was no evidence to suggest foul play or suicide.
