Woman dies after fall from Queen Mary
LONG BEACH, Calif. - A woman authorities say fell some 75 feet from the Queen Mary ocean liner into Long Beach Harbor is dead, reports CBS station KCBS-TV in Los Angeles.
The Los Angeles Times says she was 26, and fell from one of the walkways of the ship, which has been converted into a hotel and museum, into frigid harbor waters.
The circumstances of the fall were not immediately known.
Long Beach Fire Department spokesman Steve Yamamoto told The Associated Press firefighters received a call at about 8:35 p.m. Monday that a woman had fallen off the ship and a 40-year-old man jumped about 15 feet into the water to rescue her. He says the woman was taken to a hospital in critical condition. The man also was taken to a hospital for treatment of hypothermia.
Yamamoto says two Long Beach police officers who jumped in the water to help with the rescue were not injured.
