Will The Cast of "Glee" Go Home With a Grammy?

NEW YORK (CBS/AP) The cast of "Glee" has 106 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, five albums that have reached platinum or gold status, and performed a sold-out tour. But is that enough to get the Gleeks a Grammy?

"Glee" stars are nominated for two awards: best compilation soundtrack for motion picture, television or other visual media, and best pop performance by a duo or group with vocals.

The first nomination is for their first album, "Glee: The Music, Volume 1." They're up against TV shows "True Blood" and "Treme," and films "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" and "Crazy Heart."

Their second nomination has critics wondering whether  the Gleeks are even eligible. Their rendition of "Don't Stop Believin'" peaked at No. 4 on the Hot 100 chart and is the cast's best-seller and highest-charting song. However, are the members of "Glee" a musical group outside of their FOX show?

Since  they're competing against pop groups Maroon 5, Paramore, Sade and Train, it's hard to say for sure.

Cast member Amber Riley, who plays the fierce Mercedes Jones, says, "It's weird because I feel like we're not necessarily a singing group. We just do it for television, so to be recognized as a group ... it's just really weird."

Even Recording Academy CEO and President Neil Portnow thought the cast's nominations were "unique."

"Some of the categories where they wound up are interesting because they do face off with other groups that really are established strictly as musical groups and don't have the other components of a television show or something of that nature," Portnow said. "They are a group that works together, performs together...and have done some touring and continue to do live performances. It is a component of what they do. I think what's interesting is it's not solely what they do."

One of the record of the year nominees, Cee Lo Gree, had his  "Forget You" covered by the "Glee" cast with guest performer Gwyneth Paltrow, who will perform the rendition during the Grammy show.

"Just the way the show and popular music are dovetailing really speaks volumes for the Grammys and for the way that the show is bringing songs into people's lives," said Glen Brunman, a consultant for Columbia Records who works as the A&R (Artist & Repertoire) for the "Glee" music releases.

"It's weird because it's a cast of a show, so it's not like your typical artists in the truest sense. But it is, too. It's a new world," said Andrew Anders, executive music producer of "Glee."

"Glee" has also recently been nominated for international breakthrough act at the Feb. 15 Brit Awards, alongside Justin Bieber and Bruno Mars.

"We put out albums. We see if they sell. We go out on tour just like everybody else does. So I guess we are a singing group." Riley said.
