Widow of disgraced Ill. cop widow sues to access frozen funds

The widow of a disgraced Illinois police lieutenant is suing to unfreeze her bank accounts, CBS Chicago reports.

Melodie Gliniewicz, the widow of Fox Lake police Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz, is asking that everyone refrain from rushing to judgment about her family, saying through her attorney the truth would come out in time.

But, in the meantime, Gliniewicz says she is unable to pay her mortgage, doctor bills and other family expenses.

She's asking for a prompt hearing to lift the temporary court order that is freezing her personal checking and savings accounts.

Earlier this month, Lake County investigators announced that Joe Gliniewicz committed suicide and that he was being investigated for stealing money from the Fox Lake Police Explorer training program.

"They're going to want to make sure this money didn't come from the Explorer scouts," said CBS Chicago legal analyst Irv Miller. "The Lake County authorities want to make sure that any money that gets returned to her doesn't have any taint."

The Lake County state attorney's office says it's an ongoing investigation and can't comment.
