Why Buy a Second Monitor When There's Dexpot?
Virtual-desktop software provides an inexpensive and effective productivity boost: They give you the rough equivalent of a second (and third, and fourth) monitor without any extra hardware.
Dexpot is a virtual-desktop manager that's been around for years, but a recent update brings some sweet Windows 7-powered goodness. Specifically, a new plug-in called SevenDex pops up thumbnail views of your desktops when you mouse over the Dexpot icon in your taskbar. Take a look:
Cool, right? See, the problem with virtual desktops is that it's often hard to remember what's where. For instance, did you leave Word running on Desktop 2 or Desktop 3? Instead of having to cycle through all your desktops to find what you're after, now you can just steal a glance at the preview thumbnails, then click the one you want. Awesome.
If your budget (or desk) won't accommodate a second monitor, I can't recommend Dexpot highly enough.
The tool remains free of charge for private use. It's compatible with all versions of Windows dating back to 2000, but obviously the SevenDex plug-in works only with Windows 7. Image via Download Squad.
