Who Is More Nuts About Whom?

Goldie Hawn and Steve Martin battle the Big Apple in their new movie, a remake of The Out-of-Towners.

Just about everything goes wrong for the characters they play, a couple from Ohio who leave the Midwest for the possibility of a job in New York City, reports CBS This Morning Co-Anchor Jane Robelot.

Before the movie is over, the hapless duo face robbery, imprisonment, and make a public spectacle of themselves in Central Park.

Martin and Hawn, who are both 53 years old, have previously starred together in Housesitter (1992), and they apparently are members of a mutual admiration society.

"Oh, well, it will sound like badÂ…celebrity chat," says Martin. "But she has a great spirit, and she brings that to the setÂ… And you're happy to see her. She's already laughing, and she's been there for, like, two or three minutes. It just makes the day soÂ…wonderful."

For her part, Hawn calls Martin "endlessly available. He is generous. He's really funny. He keeps me feeling happy inside. There are many sides to Steve."

Martin interjects, "The dark side. I have a dark side."

Hawn: "I like your dark side."

Martin: "I know."

Hawn: "I love it. I love it because it makes you who you are."

Does it hurt to bring an element of intelligence to a comedic role?

"'Smart' is such a relative term," says Martin. "I mean, I'm around people, people are around me, and they think, 'He's smart.' But I'm around people, and I'm going, 'Oh, I'm stupid.' So it is a very relative term."

Ironically, Hawn got her start in the movies by playing dumb in Cactus Flower (1969) opposite Walter Matthau. When she watches that performance, what does she see?

Says Hawn, "I see a very young Goldie. Very young and very new."

Asks Martin, "Did you like yourself in it?"

Hawn: "I did. I did. I meanÂ…she was just a young girl. I was happy to be there."

Martin: "But alwaysÂ…very together, very smart, and learning about life really quickly. You took your lessons and really learned them."

Hawn: "I took my lessons fast. Yes, that's true. I was made to."

In private life, Hawn has been living with actor Kurt Russell since 1986. Martin is divorced from actress Victoria Tennant.

The Out-of-Towners is a remake of a 1970 film that starred Jack Lemmon and Sandy Dennis. Written by Neil Simon, that movie offered a bleaker look at New York than the one in the Martin-Hawn version.
