White House Misses Another Deadline
The White House missed another deadline Monday to provide the Senate Judiciary Committee with documents related to the administration’s warrantless wiretapping program, prompting the committee chairman, Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), to again raise the possibility of contempt proceedings.
“The time is up; we’ve waited long enough,” Leahy declared. “I prefer cooperation to contempt.”
In June, the committee subpoenaed documents related to the surveillance, setting July 18 as an initial date of compliance. Leahy then extended the deadline twice, first to Aug. 1, then to Monday.
“I have worked in good faith with this administration,” Leahy said. “Unfortunately, that good faith has been met with continued stonewalling tactics of dodge and delay.”
