(CBS News) Apple announced details of the new iPad arrival on Friday.

Apple Stores will make the new iPad available on Friday March 16 at 8 a.m. local time. Buyers won't be limited to Apple Stores, however. The third-generation tablet will also be available at Best Buy, Radio Shack, Sam's Club, Target and Walmart in the U.S.

Other countries receiving the new iPad on Friday are Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands will also have the device.

Apple's new iPad starts at $499 for a 16 gigabyte model. The second-generation model, the iPad 2, is also available at its new price of $399.

The new iPad was announced March 7 at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco. Pre-orders sold out within days of the Apple event.
