What's In Your Carry-On Bag?
Calling all road warriors! Business Hacks wants to know what gear goes where you go. What are your travel staples, your must-have accessories for flights, train rides, even road trips? Here's a sampling of the stuff I pack when I'm headed to the airport:
- Palm Centro The latest addition to my mobile arsenal. I retired my trusty Palm TX PDA in favor of this all-in-one smartphone, which combines the oldie-but-goodie Palm OS (which I use for everything from reading e-books to playing games) with Sprint's speedy 3G network. I lurve it.
- Verizon AirCard 595U This EV-DO modem, which plugs into my notebook's USB port, provides fast Internet access just about everywhere. No more hunting for Wi-Fi hotspots! Of course, I may chuck it once I figure out how to "tether" the Centro (that is, use it as a wireless modem for my notebook).
- Stereo Bluetooth headset As I mentioned in a recent post, a stereo Bluetooth headset lets my Centro double as an iPod. I had to install a third-party utility to get it to stream stereo audio, but it works like a charm.
- Chargepod Believe it or not, I like to travel light. Schlepping half a dozen chargers makes that impossible. The Chargepod (pictured) is a shiny little disc that can charge up to six devices (not including my notebook, alas).
- Magazines and a paperback Sometimes you just need analog entertainment -- especially during those times when the flight crew demands all electronics be turned off. Other essentials: gum, earplugs, and an apple.
