Webber-Less Kings Stun Spurs In OT

Playing the hottest team in the NBA and without the injured Chris Webber, the Sacramento Kings were decided underdogs against San Antonio on Tuesday night.

But Vlade Divac had 27 points and 15 rebounds and Jason Williams scored seven points in overtime as the Kings beat the Spurs 104-100.

"Our best player was out, we're playing the hottest team in the league and (were) drilled by the (Golden State) Warriors last night, I don't think many people thought we could win this game," Kings reserve guard Jon Barry said.

  • The victory was huge for Sacramento, which has made the playoffs once in the past 13 years. The Kings moved past idle Minnesota and into the seventh playoff spot in the Western Conference and snapped San Antonio's seven-game winning streak. The Spurs are 26-5 since March 1.

"We just need to keep winning, we control our own destiny," Kings coach Rick Adelman said. "If we finish strong, we will be there. We can't worry about what other teams like Seattle are doing."

Tim Duncan led San Antonio with 32 points and 19 rebounds, while David Robinson had 17 points and 15 rebounds. Avery Johnson gave the Spurs a third double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

It was a difficult loss for the Spurs, who could have picked up a game on Utah in the race for the league's best record. Utah lost in Seattle, but remains 1 1/2 games ahead of San Antonio.

The Spurs were just 17-of-33 from the free throw line, while Sacramento was 24-of-33.

"It was a hard-fought game, but when a team makes 50 percent of its free throws in a close game you're not going to win that way," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said.

Vernon Maxwell scored 15 points and Williams had 14 points and seven assists for the Kings, who won for the sixth time in seven games, despite playing without Webber.

Webber, wh leads the team in scoring (20.1) and the league in rebounding (13.0), missed his second straight game with a sprained lower back and is questionable for Thursday's home game against the Los Angeles Clippers.

"It was a real gutty win by this team," Adelman said. "I especially liked the way we played in overtime."

Ahead by one point, Williams made a baseline jumper and Barry followed with a steal and passed to Maxwell for a layup, putting the Kings ahead 101-96 with 52 seconds left. The Kings made three free throws to seal the victory.

Williams opened the overtime with a 3-pointer and scored on a drive in the lane, putting Sacramento ahead 97-94 with 2:35 left.

Following a Kings' turnover, Robinson scored inside, tying the game 92-92 with 14.1 seconds left in regulation. Duncan missed a short baseline jumper at the buzzer, sending the game into overtime.

Notes: Mario Elie was called for consecutive technical fouls midway through the third quarter and was ejected. ... The Kings are one of nine teams in the NBA with an increase in attendance this season. Their 13 percent increase is the largest in the league. ... Robinson and Duncan combined to miss 15 of 25 shots in the first half. ... The Kings are 4-4 in overtime games this season.
