Watch Out. Immigration Could Be Back Again.
One of the best ways to figure out whether Congress plans to take up an immigration measure is by asking the office receptionists.
That is, if you can get through to them.
It looks like immigration opponents are at it again, flooding the phone lines and faxes, urging senators to block a proposed amendment to the Department of Defense authorization bill.
"It primarily started on Monday. We are getting more and more each day," said Jessica Smith, spokeswoman for Sen. James Webb (D-Va.). "My office manager just told me she is asking for additional lines for the front desk because they are getting clogged."
The target this time is a measure from Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), known as the DREAM Act, which would put individuals who were brought to the country illegally as children onto the path to citizenship as long as they graduate from high school and continue onto college or military service.
