Watch out George Lucas! Fans Recreate Star Wars Film
LOS ANGELES (CBS) Imagine being given the opportunity to remake and star in your favorite movie piece by piece in whatever way you wanted to. "I had a huge interest in getting people to work together on a film," said Casey Pugh, "and I wanted to find a new way to collaborate on film."
Instead of starting from scratch, he remade one of the most prolific films ever, "Star Wars: A New Hope." He cut up the film in 15-second pieces and threw together on a site with simple directions for his future filmmaking colleagues: "You claim one and re-film it however you like, we put it back together and watch the magic."
The word spread and soon enough hundreds of "Star Wars" fans from around the world claimed their favorite scenes, recreating them and uploading them back to the site. From animations to stop-motion Lego laser fights, in the end Pugh received about 1,000 submissions for the 473 clips.
The final crowd-sourced feature film incorporates each bit seamlessly and has not only hit a chord with Jedi lovers but with the film industry, which recently awarded the film with the Interactive Media Emmy. "We are the first broadband-only production to win an Emmy," said Pugh. "That's a huge step for the Internet and interactive media."
Pugh hopes to use this film as a stepping stone for other similar projects. And as Yoda would say to Pugh in this instance, "Let the force be with you."
