SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Police have released home surveillance video of a man attacking a 13-year-old girl in her home in San Jose in the middle of the day, reports CBS San Francisco.

The bearded man can be seen on video approaching the girl at her doorstep, holding his phone like he was recording her. He claimed to be lost, the girl said. He asked for her name and age, but she refused.

"My parents tell me the world is not a safe place," said the girl, during an interview with CBS San Francisco.

"He started asking me really inappropriate questions," she said. "So that's when I decided to run inside the house. And I tried to slam the door on him. But I couldn't. So he gets inside, then he tries to grab me. So I push him back, I try to get him off of me, and then I slam my hand into his face, and that's when he decides to get off of me."

At one point during the altercation, as the man's hands were around the back of the girl's head, pulling her toward his chest. she smacked him in the face.

"I just see this man on top of me, and I'm like 'What's going on? How is this happening to me?'" she said.

The girl eventually breaks free, takes off her backpack and starts looking for a sharp or heavy object to use as a weapon.

In the video, the man can be seen looking outside, closing the door and stepping toward her again. But then he pauses, turns and leaves.

"If he was really, really vicious, he would've came after me, and started doing things inside the house," the girl said.

Last month San Jose police believe the same man, wearing a green shirt, followed a woman into a bathroom at a nearby supermarket and tried to sexually assault her.

As for the girl's mother, she says the attack has shattered their sense of security.

"Very heartbroken (that) this kind of thing can happen in this neighborhood, inside my home," she said. "It's very sick."

The suspect is described as a white male adult, approximately 30-years-old, medium height, thin build, with a beard. He was last seen wearing a black beanie, blue long-sleeve button-down shirt, and light-colored cargo shorts. He was also seen carrying a dark-colored messenger bag. The suspect may be riding a light blue 10-speed-style bicycle.

Anyone with information about him has been asked to call San Jose police Detective Brandon Scholten at (408) 277-4102. Anonymous tips can be left at the Crime Stoppers tip line at (408) 947-7867.
