(VIDEO) Car chase that led up to shooting near U.S. Capitol; driver has died

(CBS) - The woman who led police on a car chase after trying to breach a security barrier near the White House has died from gunfire, police say.

The incident, which ended with the woman being shot, began when police say she was driving a black Lexus with a young child inside and ignored officials' instructions to move away from a barrier near the White House.

A video from Alhurra, the U.S.-based and congressionally funded Arabic language satellite TV station, shows the car jerking backward toward police officers whose guns are drawn, then speeding off. The car rounds a traffic circle and then heads toward the U.S. Capitol building, near where the driver was eventually shot by police.

CBS affiliate WUSA reports that the child in the car was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

A police source told CBS News that one officer was injured in his car when he responded to a call for help from Capitol police indicating that the woman's car was headed toward the Capitol building. The cause of his injuries has not been confirmed.
