Vice President Al Gore insists it's too early to make a campaign announcement, even though this is a big week for Republican presidential candidates.
Lamar Alexander formally announced his candidacy Tuesday in his home state of Tennessee.
On Sunday, Texas Gov. George W. Bush announced the formation of an exploratory committee. And Wednesday night, Elizabeth Dole is expected to make her long-awaited announcement.
The vice president offered some encouragement to Dole.
Gore said the country is no longer uncomfortable with women in leadership positions.
Gore suggested that he might try to distance himself somewhat from President Clinton. And he dismissed suggestions that his own campaign could be tarnished by the Monica Lewinsky affair.
Gore said he intends to focus on the future, not wallow in the past.
